How Does Your Garden Grow?

Recently, we had a winter thaw. It was great to see some grass outside of my office window after the winter months. I started thinking about what flowers I would plant in the spring and what flowers I would grow in my garden. Of course, as Michigan winters go, we received another ten inches of snow. The MSBO Board has adopted the 2009 MSBO Board of Directors candidate slate. For more information on this year’s board candidates, log on to the MSBO web site. MSBO will be using the same electronic voting system that was used last year. This will allow all MSBO
members to vote regardless of attendance at the Annual Meeting. Voting will take place shortly before and during the MSBO Annual Meeting from April 29-30, 2009 in Detroit. Read more
British School Business Officials Visit MSBO
A group of British school business officials, referred to as "bursars" in Great Britain, recently visited Michigan and MSBO. As part of their trip they presented information on the British system, including a discussion on how school business professionals do their job. MSBO members talked about their job duties and their role and responsibilities in strategic leadership in their school districts. Read more

IRS Notice 2009-3 Revisited: Rely on Written Guidance Over Verbal
January 1, 2009 has come and gone—but the 403(b) deadlines are still firmly rooted to that deadline.
Ellie Lowder, an independent consultant and author of the forthcoming third edition of The 403(b) Compliance Guide for Public Education Employers, advises caution about relying on verbal assurances that may not be explicit in the written guidance in IRS Notice 2009-3. Be aware that written guidance is the standard used by the IRS in determining whether your district meets all compliance requirements. Read more
