Thirteen/WNET New York has announced GREEN SQUAD, a new national multi-platform initiative that will engage middle school-aged students in the quest to make and keep America "green." In GREEN SQUAD, teams of 12- to 14-year-olds from around the country will challenge friends, families, neighbors and one another to make their community the "greenest" in America. From creating new ways to recycle and planting trees to hosting "green" car washes and organizing eco-themed social events, the teams will engage in a fun, exciting competition to raise awareness about the need to reduce carbon footprints and keep the planet

The students will join us in July at our Summer Leadership Camp.

Congratulations to the following schools who received scholarship money from SET-SEG for the 2008 Camp:

  • Brandon High School
  • Burt Township High School

Congratulations to a Special Teacher

It is always special when you are recognized by your peers for a job well done. Even more rewarding when the students you work with day in and day out recognize you. Congratulations to Jim Hodges, long-time NHS Adviser at Vestaburg High School and one of the "founding fathers" of the Michigan Association of Honor Societies, for his recent national recognition.

To view the article about Jim's award, please follow this link to his local newspaper!

Who selects NHS/NJHS Members?

In speaking with a school a few weeks ago, I found that their selection process was a bit off. Instead of using a Faculty Council for selection, the Faculty Council (FC) gave recommendations based on student forms, then the NHS Adviser selected the students that would be inducted. For schools that hold chapters with NHS/NJHS, this process is incorrect and the appropriate way to select members is spelled out in the National Constitution.

Membership for 2008-2009

We are very excited about our new membership structure for 2008-09! We have been serving Michigan's student council and honor society advisers and students for many, many years now. Our conferences help develop leadership in the youth of our state and also provide resources for advisers to continue that training throughout the school year when not at conferences. However, we realized that while our mission was on target, it was exclusive. Being exclusive certainly isn't a bad thing, unless the opportunities we provide are not available for the other students in your school through other associations.

It is with great pleasure that we now open our doors to ALL student leaders from all student groups! Some of our member schools have been ahead of the curve - already they bring their class officers to all of our conferences. Now we understand why - we provide services for student leaders and their advisers that no one else does.

Are You Coming or Going?

If you know you're heading out the door of student leadership when the final school bell rings in a few days, make sure you leave your notes, binders and all other resources for the new incoming adviser - plus a little note that says, "Good luck in the fall - this training will help you!" and attach to that note this newsletter.

Then for the NEW ADVISERS.... come join us for a workshop that will help get you through your first year! Been doing it for a few years but still feeling lost most days? You can come too!

October 6 - Honor Society Advisers' Workshop, Lansing
