Could YOU Have Been a Teacher Back in 1872??
Earlier this month I had the opportunity to go to a meeting of State Student Council Directors out in San Diego, CA. This is a great meeting I attend each year and discuss with other state directors how they operate their own associations, conferences, board students and other issues facing state associations. While in San Diego this year, I visited an area called Old Town and while the building wasn't open, I was able to peer in the windows of the first public school of San Diego! On the wall outside was a very intriguing sign, titled "1872 Instructions to the Teachers" and I found it quite interesting in light of some issues that schools face today. I hope you get a good laugh from some of these!

Students Looking for a Great Opportunity?
Each year, students hoping to elevate their leadership skills and their involvement in the State Association seek out a position on our Board of Delegates. We work with about 25 students from around the state - students that are geared up for a new challenge and the opportunity to work closely with their peers from across Michigan. If you have students that are interested, or students you feel would be great for this position, please direct them to the website below for more information and an application.

Everyday we hear about hundreds of people who lose their jobs, and others struggling to make ends meet when inflation has increased the cost of living.
It is a sad time in the state of Michigan right now, but something can be done about it. That change can come from the leaders from throughout the state. As student leadership organizations, we have the power to bring about change to the country. Each year, the state Board of Delegates chooses one special charity in the state to be the state charity of the year. This year our focus is on Penrickton Center for Blind Children....

By definition, a retreat is a single or multi-day offsite meeting to discuss strategy, build stronger teams, and formulate goals. These meetings tend to require more time and can be planned to relate to something specific or something broad. There are several aspects that attribute to planning a successful chapter/council retreat, some of the most important being: setting a date, time, and place, creating an agenda, organization, activities, food, supervision, and clean up.
