Happy New Year!

Well, happy new SCHOOL year that is! Welcome back from a summer I hope was relaxing, enjoyable and refreshing. All to get you back in the game for this year. We don't get much rest here at MASC/MAHS over the summer... two summer camps, 500 students - it's a little tiring! Both camps were a major success and if your students attended, take a look at the pictures (middle level pictures  |  high school pictures).

For those of you that are returning advisers from last year, you will continue to receive this newsletter so long as your membership is renewed for 2008-2009 by November 1! So make sure you send it in! Our new membership structure for this year opens the doors to all student clubs within your school and more advisers/moderators, so jump aboard and join us for an exciting year of leadership!

New adviser? WELCOME! Take a look at the links over to the left to explore more about our association - who we are, what we do, when we do it, and more. Our website is full of resources to help you do your job more effectively and we've provided links to these areas just to the left side of this newsletter. Enjoy and welcome!

Parental Waivers - Worth It?

If you've ever been to our adviser workshops, you probably already know that those wonderful liability/release waivers you have students sign to go off-campus don't really mean much. It looks far better to a judge when you are looking out for the students and making sure parents are aware of when/where/why, but it might not stop a lawsuit from coming your way. It just might help turn the results in your favor, depending on what the case is about. Our message is validated by a recent article from Thrun Law Firm, the lawyers that just might represent your very school district!

The Michigan Court of Appeals recently ruled that a pre-activity waiver of liability signed by a parent or legal guardian does not waive a child's right to sue for injuries sustained while engaging in that activity.

Show Me the Money!

Help us learn more about how you fundraise, who you work through, what you raise and what you do with it.

Four simple questions, two minutes of your time. We will share the scoop with you after we collect it!

What The Wiki?

So much information, in so many places.
So much to share, no good way to get it out there.
So much to collect, no way to track it all.

One aggravation for leadership advisers, executive officers and committee chairs is information management. How do you make sure everyone's on the "same page"? How do you establish ONE location for all the information that needs to be disseminated and collected? And the mounds of paperwork - come on! Not only does it add clutter, it's not very green.

Over the past few years, a technology has become widely available to internet users and most importantly, FREE to those in education...
