Bargaining Briefs: Invoking a Third Party in Contract Bargaining

Peter SilveriThis is a difficult time for public school bargainers in Michigan – difficult for both boards and employee groups. When the bargaining process has reached impasse, the involvement and influence of an objective third party can sometimes help resolve issues and lead to a settlement. Two mechanisms available to bargainers in Michigan are mediation and fact finding. Incidents of mediation and fact finding have increased dramatically in public school bargaining in Michigan over the past couple of years.
