NHS/NJHS Selection Using "Point Systems"

NHS/NJHS Selection Using “Point Systems“

QUESTION: Our school uses a point system where the cutoff is 60 out of 84 for membership.  We have a few students who scored within a couple points of the cut-off. Can we induct them on a probationary status where they are aware of the areas in which they need to demonstrate improvement in by a given deadline, or would they either have to be selected or not selected.

ANSWER: There are many things that need to be addressed here, such as the "cutoff" and induction as "probationary".

Resource for Improving School Climate

Resource for Improving School Climate

A student from Fraser High School, Molly Kilcline, and her adviser, Nancy Scopas, shared with me a new leadership resource that I hope will catch on all over Michigan and the United States. Boom Boom Cards are interactive playing cards that not only encourage random acts of kindness, they track those acts to see how far they spread. For example, if I had a card that instructed me to "Sit with someone new at lunch today", I would do just that. Afterwards, I would go online and log the results of my actions, then I would either give the card to someone else (NOT the person I sat with!) or leave it somewhere that someone else could pick it up. As the card gets passed and do-gooders log their activities online using the card code, I can see the ripple effect of my simple action and how it will spread across my city, state and hopefully, the entire nation and world.

A deck of cards costs just $12.99 (26 cards in a deck). Pass these out at your next meeting to your leadership students and let them get the ball rolling. Hopefully you'll begin to see students doing random acts of kindness all over and you can track the entire deck and individual cards as they move through your school, community and beyond!
