House Okays "Race to the Top" Measures

Jim Ballard With the overall effort enjoying the endorsement of the State Board of Educations, the House ended this week by approving legislation needed by the state to compete for $400 million in federal “Race to the Top” monies. In so doing, the Lower Chamber enhanced the qualification criteria for opening and operating new charter schools while blending the issue into an omnibus bill that set the stage for conference committee consideration actions expected to occur and be completed before the Michigan Legislature recesses for the holidays. Movement of the package was hailed by House Education Committee Chair Tim Melton (D-Auburn Hills), who said the measures represent “twenty years’ worth of educational reforms that are long overdue.” Mr. Melton also said key negotiators had determined earlier in the week that the number of bills to be sent to committee needed to be minimized, hence the successful effort to merge several of the required concepts into one all-encompassing proposal.
